Vayu Mudra (also called the Mudra of Air) is a hand
gesture used in yoga and Ayurveda believed to help balance the air element
(Vayu) in the body. It is particularly associated with alleviating issues
related to excess air or wind in the body, such as gas, bloating, joint pain,
and certain neurological or muscular conditions.
How to Do Vayu Mudra
1. Sit comfortably in a meditative posture (like
Sukhasana, Padmasana, or
Vajrasana).
2. On both hands:
Fold the index
finger to touch the base of the thumb.
Press the thumb
gently over the folded index finger.
Keep the other
three fingers (middle, ring, and little) extended and
relaxed.
3. Rest the hands on your knees, palms facing upward.
4. Breathe normally and stay in this mudra for 15–30
minutes daily, or in
two sessions of
15 minutes.
Benefits of Vayu Mudra
Reduces joint pain and stiffness (like in arthritis).
Eases gastric problems, bloating, and flatulence.
Helps with Parkinson’s disease, tremors, and other
neurological issues.
Calms restlessness and anxiety by regulating nervous
energy.
Useful in chest
discomfort caused by excess gas.
When to Avoid
If you have Vata dosha dominance (according to Ayurveda),
don’t overdo this mudra—it can aggravate dryness and restlessness.
Avoid practicing on a very empty stomach or late at night
if it causes sleep disturbance.
